Default New House rental 419?

My wife is an agent with in Portland, Oregon and recently had a house go on the market (last Wednesday). On Saturday she received a call from a man who said he drove by the house and was very disappointed to find it was for sale. Why was he disappointed? Well, he came across a posting on Craigslist stating the house was for rent for $800 a month. It's a 2 bedroom, 2 bath out on 111th or somewhere close to that. Well, she was pretty surprised by that by didn't get any detail as the guy was a bit strange. Later she received another call from a person inquiring about the rental and we managed to track the posting down on Craigslist. It was accompanied by a photo taken straight from the MLS listing as well as the descriptive text. Intrigued, I responded to the ad asking if the house was still for rent...and low and behold, I received a long email back fairly quickly. By god, they're missionaries in Nigeria. Well of course they were. The general idea was that the people were sent off on a mission to Nigeria and needed to rent their house to some deserving folks. The note requested a bunch of information (which I failed to respond to, though I'm tempted to play with them for a bit) which they would "evaluate" before responding.

I thought it was an interesting variation on the ol' Nigerian email scams. Has anybody encountered this before? Who knew - fishing for houses on RMLS and offering them up for rent? Crazy times...

Here's the letter:
-------------------------------------------

Hello Dear,

Thanks for the email. I own the house and also want you to know that it was due to my transfer to West Africa, Nigeria that makes us to leave the house and also want to give it out for rent and looking for a responsible person that can take very good care of it as we are not after the money for the rent but want it to be clean all the time and the person that will rent it to take it as if it were its own. So for now, We are here in West Africa and will be staying here for the next 4 years in our new house and also with the keys of the house for rent, we try to look for an agent that we can give this documents and the keys before we left but could not find, and we as well do not want our house to be used any how in our absence that is why we took it along with us. I and my wife came over to Africa for a missionary work, so i hope you will promise us that you will take very good care of the house. So get back to me on how you could take care of our house or perhaps experience you have in renting home. Hope you are okay with the price of $700 per month.

This is the address of the house: 140 Southeast 111th Avenue, Portland OR 97216
SO IF YOU ARE REALY INTERESTED I WILL WANT YOU TO FILL THE

Cool

I think that if you will use "search" tool of this site with sender's name you will find an article about this scam. Your post includes the same mail but without stating name or e-mail address to find for you the link of this post.

We found an ad on Craigslist this week, and when we responded we got the exact same form letter (with, of course, differences in address, etc) but with no mention of Nigeria. We responded to it and ended up giving all of the info they asked for (full names, where both of us work, phone numbers, home address). We even got so far as to be asked for the deposit money and then all the red flags that I had dismissed became clear.

Did we give them any information that they could use to steal from us (identity theft, etc)? I'm concerned and at a bit of a loss as to what to do.

Also I was unable to find the other thread that was mentioned, even using the name that was used by the scammer.

koryu either you do not post headers from the mail you have received to locate where comes from. But it is good to report an Identity theft. If you still have his mail post it with full headers.
