Don't know who scammed you or how he/she did it, but you have come to the right place to get educated. Mainly, don't lose faith in yourself because your best defense is to be aware and beware. I read Nigerian and General Fraud News regularly. 419 Library Comments at the bottom of each page is a quick scam scan. Also, check out Ruined Lives in General 419 Fraud Discussions. You won't be hard on yourself after you read it.

Update: What concerns me is that you might have compromised your personal financial information during the scam. If you sent a check, con artists can use your name, bank account and routing numbers to grab more money. On the other hand, if they have obtained a credit card number and security code, they will use your good name to run up charges. One-thousand dollars is loose change to an experienced scammer. For these types, the pot at the end of the rainbow is your identity, i.e. name, birth date, social security number, address, bank account and credit card numbers, etc. (see Insider Information in Identity Fraud forum).
