Fat Finger Dialing

Consumers should be aware of “fat finger dialing” a new scheme that can result in high than expected charges when making collect calls.

The fat finger calling scheme is simple phone scam. The scammers simply buy a number that is similar to a large and popular collect calling service. When a consumer places a collect call but misspells or hits an incorrect button when dialing, the similar number is dialed. The victim gets connected to the party you wished to call, but with the unintended phone company. Without even knowing it, the victim is then subject to much higher charges than those of the service they actually intended to use

If you suspect you’re a victim of this scam you should contact the phone company that charged you for the call in question, which should be listed on your phone bill. FCC rules may protect you. On-line complaint forms are also available.
