Insider Information Scams

This is a scam with an old-school style. Instead of the normal, run-of-the-mill phishing scam aimed at online identity theft, this online scam sends the target a “misdirected” e-mail or instant message with secret, unsolicited insider information on a company that’s about to take off. The intended victim is no-doubt supposed to be thrilled about the opportunity that has just fallen into their lap.

Not so fast! These messages have 2 things in common: there was no accident involved in sending them, and their intent is to get you to buy the company’s stock. The only sure way to be safe is to assume that anything that comes via postal mail or e-mail is a scam and to seek independent verification. Or, alternatively, just hit the delete key. If it’s too good to be true is almost surely is. Besides, insider trading schemes are unethical and illegal.
