The Séance Scam

Desperate and grief stricken people will often turn to so-called mediums to try to contact lost ones loved in the after life via a séance. Whatever ones’ beliefs, anyone who stops to think about it must agree that this is a situation that scam artists can easily take advantage off.

“Channeling” (the process by which the medium allows a spirit limited use of their physical body to communicate with those present) is a common element of a séance. Channeling is assumed by believers to offer opportunities for more positive interaction and communication between the living medium and the visiting spirit.

Channeling is quite easily faked, and is considered by skeptics to be among the most basic tricks. Cold reading is a technique used in channeling to convince another person that the reader knows much more about a subject than they actually do. There is, of course, no scientific proof that any kind of legitimate channeling has ever occurred.
