The Kuluttajavirasto Project: Finland Government gets Cracking on Online Cheats

Consumer Agency of Finland recently launched a website to increase awareness about online scams. On the occasion, it urged its people to step forward and report fraud as and when they come across one. Presently, it felt victims of scams were shying away from reporting them fearing embarrassment. It took the opportunity to tell them fraudsters are professionals in their field. It is as easy as a habit for them to scam.

The agency expects awareness to prompt people to think twice before subscribing to such offers as WinClub (now running under the name WinCapita). The government National Bureau of Investigation has launched a probe to ascertain whether the company is scam.

Authorities having a close look at WinCapita

Fears about WinCapita being a scam were sparked off when its website closed down without notice. It is now being alleged that the company may have scammed 10,000 investors out of 50 Million Euros. The government decided to scrutinize the company and see if it is a pyramid scheme this week.

But if online reaction is anything to go by, people may still not be clear whether they should be circumspect before investing in the company. Even after government announced its decision, only four people have come forward and complained against the company. It is precisely such behavior that the Agency hopes to change.

The initiative shown by the Finnish consumer agency of late, is laudable. Just a few weeks ago, it hauled a lending company to court in a first in the country’s legal history. The new website is another feather in its cap.
