Perry Belcher: Mr. Cure All arrested and charged with con
43-year-old Perry M. Belcher was arrested last week under charges of perpetrating medical scams. He has been accused of committing computer fraud, carrying out fraudulent business practices and impersonating a licensed medical professional. He sold medicines online under the brand name Selmedica.
Selmedica products were touted to cure such ailments as anxiety, acne, vertigo and shingles. He is accused of bilking thousands of customers with fraud remedies in the last 10 years. The products, although claimed to have been made under its regulation, apparently was never approved by FDA.
Scam was supposedly on for a decade
Officials from Better Business Bureau were at his heels for several years. He was constantly on their radar as the bureau received a hundred complaints over the last seven years. But they found it hard to pin down charges as he used the front of several companies to conduct his business. They were not able to link him immediately to the activities of the business. The products also were sold through various websites, most of them with names like ‘www.secretcure… .com’.
Another thing that must have befuddled authorities must have been his selling the treatment through a so-called medical expert, Pat Harper. It is now alleged that Pat Harper was a fictitious persona created by Belcher to lend credibility to his products.
It is also suspected that Bilcher charged customer credit cards without getting proper authorization from them. To begin with, free reports and eBooks were given away to customers who bought online. These booklets did not contain anything much more than what was easily and freely available online.
Somewhere, in fine print, it was mentioned the reports were free for the customers unless after a month, they asked to continue receiving it. The catch: at the end of one month, the customers were never asked and thus were denied a chance to unsubscribe from the offer. Their subscription to the reports was automatically renewed at the end of the month and their credit cards charged with $17 every passing month.
