Mixitforme Scam: Site co-owner charged, faces stiff punishment
Co-owner of the website Mixitforme.com, David Whitaker, 33, who was arrested a few weeks back in Los Angeles Airport, was produced in court yesterday for charges to be formally announced against him. The court yesterday laid down 10 Federal charges against him each carrying a maximum of 20 years in prison sentence and a $250,000 fine. It is alleged that Dave Whitaker duped consumers of his online retail company, Mixitforme.com, by not delivering goods they had paid for. Mixitforme offered expensive electronic goods like i-Pods, video game consoles and mobile phones to online customers.
David Carpenter, 34, who used to be the Branch Manager for Bank Rhode Island and Cory Johnson, 29, are the others charged in the scam.
Whitaker, a previous convict, is alleged to have used funds of the company to source or hire such opulence as luxury cars, private jet flights, security personnel and a yacht.
Cory Johnson is credited with the idea of starting the online store which was later taken up by Whitaker. He has been officially charged with conspiring with Whitaker for committing fraud and money laundering apart from other charges. Johnson’s charges carry a maximum of 15 years in prison along with fines up to $500,000. His sentence is due to be heard on 20 June.
Bank manager, David Carpenter, has been charged with playing along with the duo by misusing his position at the bank. It is alleged that he turned a blind eye to a $1 million fraud on his bank by the duo in return for a plush job at their company in the future.
David Whitaker was arrested after being expelled by Mexican authorities for staying illegally in that country. Whitaker had fled Rhode Island after the scam was found out and had landed in Mexico after taking brief stopovers in the US.
