The Better Business Bureau of Eastern North Carolina is warning residents of the area to look out for an email scam that is doing the rounds presently. Professing to come from the US government, the scam invites its victims to subscribe to a new government initiative that is a part of the ongoing Economic Stimulus program.
The email informs of a new government initiative under the program to increase employment opportunities in the region. Individuals, the yarn proceeds to inform, can now become financially independent by becoming distributors of Flat Screen televisions. Also, the government would be willing to help initially in setting up the business, it goes on to claim.
The scam sends prospects a US treasury check of $8,900 or thereabouts, to cover expenses incurred in setting up shop. It asks recipients to deposit the check, retain a portion and wire back the rest to the government.
You would have to look extra-sharp to realize that the check is a fake. Else, as is usually the case, it is the bank which informs the victim that the check is counterfeit.
Reacting to recent complaints, President and CEO of BBB, Eastern North Carolina, Beverly Baskin said:
“Consumers should be wary of any business opportunity received through e-mail or other means which requires the recipient to cash a check and then wire funds back.”
While this warning may be meant for local consumption, there is good reason for folks from other parts of the country also to pay heed. After tasting blood here, the scam may typically move over to other parts of the country, calculating that word may not have traveled across to these parts.

Interesting!
These e-mail scams are as old as the internet! What do they all are thinking?
I don’t expect that people do believe this is a real business offer. But…since money is given away… why not take it, ah?
