FDA censures 25 Online Cancer Cure Peddlers

On June 17, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) issued warning letters to 23 online companies and to 2 individuals for making fraudulent claims about the efficacy of their products in treating cancer. The companies were marketing their products in their websites by claiming them to be effective in curing, treating, mitigating or preventing the disease.
The FDA warnings came about as the products were not tested and shown to be safe or effective for treating cancer. Selling of these products, as such amounted to violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the agency informed.
The products came in different forms like tablets, black salves, tonics, teas, and creams. They were claimed to have been made from exotic natural ingredients like bloodroot, coral calcium, the herbal tea Essiac, Cat’s Claw, ellagic acid, and even shark cartilage!
These were sold online under different brand names and have a flourishing presence on the net.
Margaret O’K. Glavin, the FDA’s associate commissioner, had this to say:
“These warning letters are an important step to ensure that consumers do not become the victim of false ‘cures’ that may cause greater harm to their health.”
In a Press Release, FDA also listed some of the claims made by the companies in marketing their products:
- “Treats all forms of cancer”
- “Causes cancer cells to commit suicide!”
- “80% more effective than the world’s number one cancer drug”
- “Skin cancers disappear”
- “Target cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone”
- “Shrinks malignant tumors”
- “Avoid painful surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or other conventional treatments”
Companies failing to act on the objectionable practices mentioned in the warning letters are liable to be penalized with seizure of the products and criminal prosecution.
