Fake check scam unearthed in Vermont

On Wednesday, Police in South Burlington, Vermont inadvertently stumbled upon an internet scam operating from the area. Following a tip-off from a credit union, police raided a house in South Burlington and discovered a large cache of fake checks there. The fake checks, amounting to almost half a million dollars, has lead Police to believe that these may be part of an intricate internet scam under way in the area.
Fake checks are common means to carry out different types of internet scams. Typically, the phony checks are mailed by fraudsters to unsuspecting victims with a request to cash them and wire or send a substantial part of the check amount either back to them or to one of their associates. Victims deposit the check and send back the money without waiting for the deposited check to clear. Weeks later, banks inform the victims that the check was a fake.
The present scam was brought to the attention of the Police by officials from the Vermont Federal Credit Union. A teller at the credit union called up the law enforcement agency after noticing a man depositing several stashes of fake $100 bills. Investigations after police arrived on the scene, lead them to a house in South Burlington, which they raided to unearth the hoard of fake checks.
Officials from the Police Department are not releasing more details as of now. They have sounded an alert, however, saying checks worth several thousands of dollars may be in circulation, waiting for unsuspecting victims to cash them and fall prey to the scam.

Why would you fall for something like this. I just got a similar check in the mail from a online auction asking them to wire money back. I mean you should know better. Best of luck and sorry you have to pay it back.
