Case of Card Skimming reported in Missouri

Kirksville Police Department has reported a case of card skimming on one of the residents there. The victim, a lady, spotted the scam when she noticed several unfamiliar debits in her debit card account statement. Someone in Chicago had made withdrawals amounting to $1500 from her personal card.

She reported the matter to the police, who ascertained after talking with her that this was a case of card skimming. The lady had been touring, but not as far as Chicago. She had been around a few places in Missouri. Probably, at a stop during this trip, her card was clandestinely skimmed by thieves, police determined.

People touring Missouri presently will do well by being cautious while using their debit or credit cards here. They can offer themselves basic protection by adhering to the following tips:

  • Make payments with cash where possible.
  • While making card payments, never let the card go out of sight.
  • Use cards that afford protection from this type of scam.

I had written about credit card skimming earlier. Read here to find out more about how card skimming takes place, how fraudsters use the stolen data, and, which are the public places where it normally happens.
