OPPD advises Omaha residents against phishing scam

The state power utility, Omaha Public Power District ( OPPD ) is warning residents against a possible phishing scam being carried out in its name. Fraudsters are calling up residents posing as employees and demanding personal information or money, it says. The call asks residents to part with such confidential information as their credit card account number and their social security number. If they don’t, they are threatened with disruption of services from the company to their premises.
The agency has reported receiving notice of two such incidents where residents have been contacted by fraudsters posing as employees of the company.
The fraudsters are so brazen in their scam attempt that they offer residents with an alternative to submitting their personal financial info: they can avoid disconnection by paying out some cash.
OPPD, while reminding customers that it never makes such calls, also had a word of advice for them:
Customers are reminded that they should never give out private or personal information to strangers making unsolicited telephones. If a customer has a question, that customer should always call OPPD first before giving anything out over the telephone.
