Notre Dame Federal Credit Union Visa Credit Card holders hit by a phishing scam

Phony Calls

Visa Credit Card holders of the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union received a rude shock last Sunday morning. Early in the afternoon, they received a call presumably from the Credit Union with an automated message informing them their credit card was suspended due to some suspicious activities in their account.

Card holders were asked to call up at a 515 number to know more. Most people did not respond as they were warned by two things: the call was made on a Sunday and the phone number the message gave was not toll-free - not a practice you expect in the service industry.

However, some people went on to make the call. They were welcomed by another recorded message that asked them to punch in their confidential account information to set things right.

This was what the scare was meant to achieve: to get access codes to accounts and later use them to steal from these accounts.

The Credit Union reported 15 people falling for the phishing scam. It was successful Monday in getting the phone number deactivated. It urged customers not to pay any heed to the messages and especially not to panic on receiving such calls.

The best response in such cases would be to wait until Monday and call up the bank to check about the message. The bank would, of course, recognize and warn people of the scam.

Those who suspect they might have passed on their confidential information should contact the union immediately and take steps to cancel their cards and get new ones issued. Call Notre Dame Federal Credit Union at 239-6611.
