A bank in North Dakota, Bismarck has revealed that online fraudsters might be targeting those who are bankrupt with a fake check scam. The Security First Bank reported one of its customers falling for a scam, carried out using ordinary mail. The customer, it stated, received a check for $4,920 by ordinary mail. A letter that came along proclaimed it was a grant from a “G and R Mining Company” to relieve the victim from his/her financial troubles. The customer had only recently filed for bankruptcy.
While not stating how the fraudsters got hold of the names of the bankrupt among its customers, the bank gave other details of their modus operandi. They announced to their victims that a second check for the same amount will follow soon enough. For that, however, the victim will have to send ten percent of the total amount back to them.
The check looked terribly real. It was hard for the victim to realize it was a fake. They only came to know later when their banks revealed it to be counterfeit. By this time, however, the scam would have made out with their money.
