Phishing Scam bothers students of University of Pennsylvania

Students of the University of Pennsylvania are presently under the sway of a sophisticated phishing scam. Since end of July, students have been receiving personalized mails in their inboxes feinting to be from the university. Carrying somber subject lines like “Help Desk Notice” or “Message from Upenn.Edu“, the email says it is part of an initiative to upgrade the university’s email systems or a drive to keep a tab on student’s usage.
In order to verify their accounts, the students are asked to reply stating their account numbers, passwords and other private account information. They are told not to take the email lightly. If they do not reply, their accounts run the risk of closure.
Robin Beck, Vice President, Information Systems and Computing, at the University summed up the scam:
When someone is asking for your personal information, that should send up a red flag.
That coupled with the odd language used in the mail is enough to be warned of the scam.
