Voter Registration Scam makes hay while the Election-Sun shines on the horizon

With elections looming in the horizon, fraudsters operating a voter registration scam are making use of the opportunity to steal identities. The fraudsters are pulling off their con by contacting people by phone or via email posing as officials from a local election board or other civic body.
They inform in their missives that they are calling up to ensure voters are registered properly for voting in the forthcoming elections. They ask people to confirm their registration by giving away such confidential information as their Social Security Numbers and their personal financial data.
Personal information obtained in this manner is then used by the fraudsters to open fresh loans in other people’s name or to utilize funds from their bank or credit card accounts.
Connecticut BBB, in a press release, sought to remind voters that officials authorized to do this task will contact them personally. The officials would hand out a Voter Registration Form which voters are required to fill out then and there. More importantly, these officials won’t require and will NEVER ask people for their personal financial information during the course of the registration process.
Those visited upon by the scam are encouraged to report it to the FTC, either online or by calling them at 1-877-ftc-help (1-877-382-4357).
