Shoppers in Ireland tipped of Card Skimming Scam

The Irish Payment Services Organization (IPSO) revealed a card skimming attack on shoppers yesterday. Fraudsters, the agency warned, have waylaid card details of about 20,000 retail store customers while they shopped last weekend.

The fraudsters obtained the details by planting a small card skimming device on credit card terminals at the retail stores after presenting themselves as technicians from the bank on a routine maintenance call.

The device recorded confidential access information of all the cards presented at the machine for making a payment. It would later use cutting-edge wireless technology to send across the stolen card details to fraudsters lying low in any part of the world. The fraudsters aimed at stealing from accounts compromised in this manner after recording their stolen access codes onto blank magnetic cards.

The banks have stepped forward and indemnified their customers against any loss accruing from the scam. In the interest of the account holders, it also placed temporary restrictions on operating their accounts till such time that the storm raised by the scam blew over.

Investigators also made headway after weaning out footage of the fraudsters in action by sieving through CCTV recordings at the stores.

They leave, however, many weekend shoppers uneasy and worried on account of their cards. Investigators have not revealed the name of the retail stores that were targeted with the scam. Scattered reports indicate the stores to be of five major retailers in the north-east region of the country.

Customers using cards of Bank of Ireland, Ulster Bank, AIB, National Irish Bank, Perm TSB, EBS, First Active, and MBNA are amongst those reported to be at risk of the scam.
