Senior residents of Seneca County, Syracuse (NY) are asked to stay in alert of a new vishing scam (i.e. phishing through phone) in circulation in the area. The Sheriff’s Department of Seneca County revealed notice of a scam that is specifically targeting elder citizens in order to glean out their secret financial information.
The phone scam is calling up residents in the age group of 55-75 years and claim they are calling from the Social Security office. Under a new scheme, the caller would claim, members from this group are eligible to receive a new card offering them additional benefits like improved insurance cover, free of charge. To avail of the offer, they are asked to give away their bank account information and their Social Security numbers.
The fraudsters aim at using information collected in this manner to steal from the painstakingly-collected savings of elder citizens. They are easy targets as the fraudsters count on them being lonely and helpless.
Those who received such calls should immediately contact the Sheriff’s office at (315) 220-3443 and pass on any information they gathered about the fraudsters to assist with the investigation.
