The Ohio Credit Union League, in a press release, is warning residents of Ohio to be wary of a phishing scam currently swamping the state. The state body, which represents 438 credit unions, alerted that the attack could be a concerted one. Not only are the fraudsters targeting multiple credit organizations in the area, but they are also using more than one media to cast their web around customers of unions here, it revealed.
The League reported thousands of residents receiving email, SMS, or phone calls notifying them their accounts with credit unions have been temporarily suspended. The messages, posing as coming from the credit unions themselves, started pouring in from Aug.19th.
It asked its recipients to call at a given number to reactivate their accounts.
The press release offers samples of the scam messages:
- A phone message from the “Ohio Credit Union Security Department” saying your credit card has been suspended and to call (450) 988-2033
- An auto dialer is calling Central Ohio phone numbers leaving a message stating that they are from “Credit Union of Ohio” and advising their credit card account has been compromised. They are directed to call 614-448-1303
- Text and e-mail messages saying, “Your CME F-C-U services was suspended for suspicious activity, call us at 6197934823″
- Text and e-mail messages from service1@superior.com advising Superior FCU members that “we have been unable to contact them concerning a compromise of their VISA card” to call 800-466-1728
- Text and e-mail messages saying, “Your Credit Union of Ohio services was suspended for suspicious activity, call us at 3054337563″
Those who call are asked for confidential account information to complete the activation process. Customers completing the call would not only lose funds in their accounts but also stand to lose their favorable credit rating, built up diligently over the years.
Account holders of CME Federal Credit Union, Credit Union of Ohio, and Superior Federal Credit Union are some of the union customers who are under siege of the attack. While flooding area residents with these messages, the fraudsters are hoping they get lucky and find a credit union customer.
Those who fear their account security has been compromised are recommended to immediately contact their union and have their account frozen. They can also lodge a complaint with the government at FTC’s official site.
The League may be contacted at (800) 486-2917 or oculmail@ohiocul.org for more information on the scam.
