SMS Scam cons saying your brother is in trouble

An SMS scam is stalking residents of Victoria and Tasmania presently. The scam is blanketing the two regions with SMS’es imploring for help. Devonport police believes the scam has visited around 9000 people so far. Due to the personal nature of the message, the police believe it is dangerous enough to have a public warning issued.
The SMS pretends to recipients it was coming from their brother. Due to some bad luck, it informs, he has lost both his wallet and his mobile phone and is now stranded. With the wallet, also went any means by which he could access some money to get out of the mess.
He is texting the message using the phone of a friend. To bail him out of his present troubles, he requests recipients to wire across some money into this friend’s account.
The fraudsters are counting at least one in a thousand would find the story plausible and wire across some money. Those who send money the first time around are supplied with more entreaties on one pretext or the other until they become suspicious.
Calling up the number sending the SMS turns a blank. Callers are treated to a message declaring the number has its “in-box” full and so is unable to take their calls.
Police warn that the scam has claimed at least two victims. By revealing the scam to more people, they are hoping to prevent more from falling for the scam.
