Email Scams look to con in the wake of Gustav and Hanna Hurricanes

With hurricanes Hanna and Gustav readying to strike US coasts, and with ravages of scams founded on Katrina still fresh in public memory, the government this time is taking no chances and is cautioning people to beware of email scams that try to swindle in their names.
Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell’s office has already reported receiving plaints about a shady email scam.
The emails sent by this scam claims they are coming from banks. It informs recipients the mail is part of evacuation efforts of the government. The recipients are asked to authenticate account ownership by providing confidential details to the scammers. To hustle them, it tells recipients to send the details before next leaving their residences.
The Attorney General warned citizens not to entertain any online request for confidential financial information. There is no reason for banks and financial institutions to ask for account-related sensitive information over an email because they already have it with them, he advised.
