Gary Warner, a crack anti-spam expert from the University of Alabama at Birmingham is alerting online users against a sudden surge in scam emails doing the rounds on the net. The surge was so pronounced recently that one in every three emails being circulated then was a scam.

The latest emails are using curiosity amongst online users over the latest hot topics to swindle them. The emails also do not shy away from introducing themselves as being from big websites like BBC, CNN, or MSNBC.

With subject lines like “You’ve received a greeting card.” or “Weekly Top News“, the mails lure recipients to click at tainted links buried inside them. Doing so, installs malicious programs called Trojans onto the users’ computer.

Such programs reside in an infected computer and snoop on confidential information stored inside or used by the owner while online. Later, they send across this information to the fraudsters for misuse. Warner tested that the latest Trojans were not detected by most among the popular anti-virus software.

The emails were remarkable for being poorly worded. They were reportedly being sent from 44 computers in Russia and other countries.

Garner advises users to ignore emails from unknown sources and definitely not click any links served inside them.
