Kidnapping Email Scam unearthed in Naperville

Police in Naperville, Illinois is warning general public to stay away from a kidnapping email scam that has already claimed a few victims since last week. In a new ploy, fraudsters are sending emails informing recipients their kids have been kidnapped. They are asked to give away a ransom to secure release of their children.

The emails come with a terse “We have hijacked your baby” in the subject line. While spelling out $50,000 as ransom money, it asks them to await further instructions for sending it. For now, it asks recipients to click on a link if they wish to view a photograph of their child.

The link connects to a zipped file presumably containing the promised snap. Recipients attempting to unzip and open it, however, will only set off the download of dangerous malware onto their computers.

The malware, said to be from redii.org, spies on confidential information in the computers and transmits them to fraudsters.

Police officials are advising users to ignore such emails and especially not to click on the links embedded inside them.
