After targeting netizens of US on the last week of July and of Australia last month, the fake airline email scam is now homing in on email users in Finland. Many online users here have reported receiving emails presenting them the scam.
Enclosing text identical to that used in the other raids, the emails pretend to be coming from a US airline company. It surprises recipients by informing them they have purchased a ticket online from the airline through its website. It drops another bombshell by informing them charges for the ticket were met by debiting their credit card accounts with the price of the ticket. The ticket, it informs helpfully, is added as an attachment to the email.
The attachment is a malware, of course, that is programmed to be downloaded by a curious click by the user onto their computers. It serves fraudsters by noting down passwords and other confidential data submitted online by the user and later transmitting the same to covert computers operated by the scammers.
Most of the callers complained to Luottokunta, a Finnish company that assists banks and merchant establishments to offer online transactions. Victims of the scam heaved a sigh of relief when the company said it will not bill them any charges that come up as a result of the scam.
