DeRidder bank up against die-hard phishing scam

A phishing scam that died down after tormenting an unidentified DeRidder bank for a week has re-emerged to take a second strike on the bank’s customers. The attack started first week of September and slipped under soon after, leaving the bank to conclude it had seen off the scam.
This week, the scam’s emails popped up in Inboxes, startling the bank’s customers all over again. The emails informed account holders that their accounts had been temporarily deactivated due to a security problem. To reactivate it, they were asked to click on a link inside the emails and submit their account number and PIN number at the website that opened out.
This time around, the scam is shooting more than one format of the emails at area residents. Investigators working on the case say, the scammers are sending the emails to customers and non-customers of the bank alike. They are sending it to email addresses they obtained by hacking into the private email server of another company. A computer forensic expert said the hackers creamed three firewalls to do the job.
It is going to be hard to prosecute the fraudsters. Investigations so far have already shown the scam to be run from overseas, probably from Japan and the UK.
