Fraudsters using name of chemical conglomerate in phishing scam

Phishing Fraudsters!

Rotterdam-based chemical business giants LyondellBasell is under attack by phishing fraudsters who are using its well-known brand names LyondellBasell and Lyondell Chemical to realize a phishing scam. Claiming to represent the company, fraudsters are targeting victims by sending out emails in the company’s name. The fraudsters are using two different facades to cheat.

In the first scheme, they say they are affiliated with Lyondell Chemical Company and claim the company is looking to recruit salaried personnel to work as ‘payment agents‘. The position would involve receiving payments on the company’s behalf from its customers. Those interested are asked to reply giving complete personal details.

In the other scheme, the mail claims to be coming from the Lyondell Chemical Endowment Fund Award (LYOEFA), which, in reality, is non-existent. The scam claims the fund has selected the mail recipient as a beneficiary. It urges him to respond immediately to claim an award from the charity.

Respondents to both the scams would probably receive checks of sizeable amounts. They would be asked to cash the checks and send back money after keeping a small percentage as commission. Later, the checks will turn out to be fraudulent, of course, and respondents will be out of any money that they send across to the fraudsters.

LyondellBasell has distanced itself from these scams up-front. It has issued press releases telling it is in no way associated with the scammers and warned the populace to stay away from them.
