Phishing Email Vaults Over Campus Security Setup

Last week, a phishing scam harried students and faculties of Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland by leaping over robust online security barriers at the campus. The scam email got through by passing itself off as official communication from the university.

The email, signed-off as from “EDU.ACCOUNT® High Speed Internet SM”, informed recipients they were required to verify their campus email accounts as a part of a new security check. They were directed to reply with their login access codes within two days. Their accounts would be shut down if they failed to do so, it threatened.

These are patent tactics used by phishing fraudsters. The aim, as always, was to whip up a frenzy and get people to give away access codes to their email accounts, and with it, all the confidential information available therein.

The latest attempt is notable, however, as it managed to scuttle over an online security network that was filtering tens of thousands of spam messages in a day. Campus authorities said there was little more they could do to thwart such scams.

Scam emails written and sent in a certain manner can circumvent any security measure, they warned. Bogus messages that are individually addressed and those without typical spam or pornographic lingo can be passed over by the best security systems. The same holds true also for fake messages coming from as-yet-untainted email addresses.

Campus officials said ultimately individuals have to build awareness and take personal security measures to prevent being overwhelmed by such scams.
