Phishing fraudsters seem to have taken a special liking to the Orange Savings Bank. After targeting the bank this June, they have trained their guns yet again on the bank. They swamped Texas with scam-calls hoping to find the bank account holders. Area residents said the calls were stalking them since three weeks.
The calls sounded strikingly real. Recipients of the calls said they carried a message recorded in a woman’s voice claiming they were calling on behalf of Orange Savings Bank. It informed recipients’ that, as a security measure, their card accounts had been temporarily deactivated.
However, the call said they could reactivate their accounts right away. For this, it asked them to key in their account number, PIN and the expiry date mentioned on the card. It paused in silence for a few moments, waiting for the recipients to feed in the numbers. After a while, the voice at the other end would again crackle and then state that the account had been reactivated.
Several victims came forward reporting they fell for the scam. They innocently gave away secret account information when they received the call. They discovered the scam when they happened to check their account statements later.
The scam seems to be the work of overseas fraudsters. One victim revealed she noticed couple of transactions in her account statement that she could not account for. They were made from PL Cataluna in Barcelona, Spain. The fraudsters had made two withdrawals of several hundred dollars from her account. If this is correct, then the fraudsters may well go scot-free.
Those receiving the calls can call FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or the FDIC Fraud Department at 1-877-275-3342 in order to lodge a complaint.
