Phishing scam ‘net’ cast at Butte Community Bank customers

The Butte Community Bank reported receiving frantic calls from its customers reporting they received calls from the bank over the weekend. What was more bewildering, complainants said, they received the calls during the night. The automated calls sought to raise an alarm claiming security of their credit card account had been busted. In typical phishing style, it asked them to confirm their account number and other confidential card details.
The calls were made from a phone carrying the San Jose area code number. When the number was looked up, however, it was seen to be listed for Garlic.com, an internet service provider. It turned out, the company was already exasperated with scammers, who had been using their number to run the scam for some time. The company is said to have reported the matter to FCC and the FBI, in a bid to stop the menace.
The bank, however, believes the scam originated from a foreign country, without specifying which. It also did not reveal how it arrived at the conclusion. The calls were made randomly, it said, hoping to hook customers of the bank.
Customers visited by the calls are being asked to contact the bank at security@buttecommunity.net for more information.
