Posting resume fetches a ‘Fake Check Scam’ for woman in Greeneville

A fake check scam visited a woman in Greeneville, TN when she posted her resume at Craigslist recently. The young woman, who requested to remain unnamed, was hoping to find gainful employment by employing the service. Soon after, a job offer came knocking on her doors.

The offer was from a company that described itself as a ‘work at home’ firm. It said she was selected and also had her first assignment ready. It sent her a check for $3,800.35 together with some instructions.

She was asked to cash the check at her local bank. 10% of the money was hers to keep. The rest, she was asked to forward to a woman in Knoxville. She was specifically instructed to use the Western Union wire transfer service to send the money.

The young lady became suspicious and decided to dig deeper. She contacted a branch of the bank that seemed to have issued the check. To her alarm, officials at the bank told her the account against which the check was issued was a fake and did not exist.

This meant she would have been scammed of any money she would have sent after cashing the check.

It is not known whether the woman reported the scam to the police or whether a hunt for fraudsters behind the scam is afoot. From the looks of it, the Knoxville woman, for one, may not be behind the scam. She might merely be somebody appointed by the real fraudsters to send and receive money, mail on their behalf.

The source also did not mention if the checks were fake or real. If real, it may be possible to identify the branch of the bank that issued the check. This could point to the location of the fraudsters acting out the scam. If real, this could also pop up a disturbing question; that of, how the fraudster/s got hold of the checks?!

I have heard so many people talking about this that I am sure it comes as no surprise to say that the best way to find jobs in a recession is to investigate jobs on employer websites:

-employers do not use recruiters in recessions because they cost money
-job boards are flooded with applicants

People just do not look for jobs on employer websites. There are thousands of employer websites in most cities and many of the job sit on there for months without applications.

Crime never pays and there is no such thing as easy money. If the woman took the job she is an accomplice to the crime and will be subjected to legal action being taken against her once she is caught.
