Financially tight fraudsters now resorting to one-scam-fits-all prototypes to con

There are signs the ongoing financial crunch is hitting fraudsters too. They seem to be economizing their energies and trimming their business models to go for one-scam-fits-all prototypes. This is borne out by a recent scam reported from Wisconsin and other parts of the US.
In the new scam, several residents of Wisconsin complained of receiving mysterious calls late into the night. The calls, said to be automated, dropped a bomb on recipients with the message that their bank debit cards were being deactivated. Reckoning people won’t notice, the call skipped mentioning the name of the bank that is calling. By doing so, the scam ensured debit card holders of all banks came within its ambit. It said the accounts were being deactivated because of some questionable charges that cropped up on their accounts.
Fraudsters were bargaining this would succeed in getting people to panic. It straight away offered a solution; it asked recipients to listlessly feed in their 15 digit card numbers to set things right. For the recipients, all this would achieve would be to allow fraudsters to clean their accounts of all money.
Showing more cunning, the fraudsters were using the phone number of a legitimate business in Florida, called Med Financial, to make the calls. A spokesman for the company said they had been getting complaints about the scam from all over the country. He said, apart from getting the tainted phone number changed, the company could do little against the scam.
Those who were visited upon by the scam were urged to call Wisconsin Consumer Protection at 800-422-7128 to lodge a complaint.
