Phishing scam solicits Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank customers

Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts was targeted by a phishing scam recently. Officials from the bank, together with local police, reported receiving several complaints from area residents beginning second week of this month. Residents complained of receiving calls from the bank on their mobile phones and landline numbers. The calls, sometimes received at unearthly hours, told them there was a problem with their bank cards.

Without offering a reason, an automated message informed account holders their card accounts had been suspended. Recipients said, the calls sounded quite official and real. It next asked them to feed in their account number, card expiry date and card PIN number to start recovery procedures. After users complied, the message thanked them and stated that services to their accounts had been reinstated.

In an alert placed on its website, the bank sought to warn customers that the calls were part of a phishing scam. They were directed at getting hold of confidential access information of the bank’s account holders. Fraudsters were randomly dialing phone number of local residents hoping to find the bank’s customers, the alert informed.

Attempts made by the bank to trace the calls proved futile. The fraudsters seem to have been using the latest VoIP technology to generate the calls.

The bank reported two victims to the scam. However, both the victims contacted the bank immediately after divulging their account details. The bank was able to limit their loss by canceling their cards and getting new ones issued to them.

The bank has asked those who had received the calls to contact them during business hours at 1-800-490-2265 or (508) 627-4266. They were asked to call at 1-800-554-8969 in case they wanted to get their cards cancelled after banking hours.
