Charter Communications email accounts under siege

An email scam is targeting all Charter Communications email account holders. The scam is sending them bogus emails asking for confidential account information. It is hoping to get access to their mail accounts and thus become privy to personal financial information of the account holders. There is a real threat of the scam tasting big success.
Charter Communications is an ISP major and is ranked third in revenues after Comcast and Time Warner. It has a customer base of more than 5 million customers across the US. This base can prove to be a happy hunting ground for the fraudsters, should they decide to run the scam across the country.
Right now, the scam is targeting residents of Westport, MA. Police here are warning residents of the scam after receiving several complaints from the area. Residents complained of getting a suspicious email from Charter Communications.
The email informed customers they needed to update their personal info with the company. It said it would be in their best interest to do so as this would protect them from fraud. The mail then proceeded to ask recipients for their user name, password and date of birth given in the email account. It warned users with account suspension if they chose NOT to submit the required details.
When the company was contacted about the email, it said the whole thing was a scam.
Yet, currently localized in Westport, there is a real threat the fraudsters may decide to run the scam elsewhere. Such scams can be run from anywhere and can target anyplace. Fraudsters may choose to target other areas sooner than later, in a bid to hit before word of the scam breaks out. For this reason, the scam is one thing customers of Charter Communications will do well to keep in the back of their minds while accessing their online email accounts.
