A woman in York was snared by fraudsters in a fake check scam recently. The woman had registered with an online job site in her quest for a job. She was targeted by the fraudsters who came upon her resume at the job site.
The woman had posted her resume at CareerBuilder.com. This is where the fraudsters saw her profile. Using a front only described as a ‘file company’, fraudsters sent her three checks with instructions to cash them. They offered her 10 percent of the check amount in return for depositing the balance at various accounts marked by the fraudsters.
The woman did as told. She cashed two of the checks at a credit union and cashed the third at a convenience store. She came to know of the scam when the concerns found out that the checks she cashed were all fakes.
The woman may not have been prepared for such a turn of events after applying for a job online. She may now go to jail for this. Police may charge her with pushing forth a scam.
