Cell phone subscribers everywhere are reportedly being targeted by a wily scam. A scam is calling up or messaging subscribers urging them to return calls to ‘+882’ numbers.

Several LIME subscribers have reported receiving the calls and messages. They said all the calls or text messages came from numbers in the ‘+882’ range. The text messages urged them to call up the given number. The calls went in a queer fashion. Those who received the calls said the caller disconnected the call without saying anything.

Their curiosity thus aroused, when subscribers called up the number to investigate, their calls either got connected to an answering machine or somebody picked up the calls and extended it without saying a word.

Those who called, ended up paying at the rate of $15-a-minute for the calls. Fraudsters behind the scam may be profiting from the enterprise by pocketing the call charges.

The scam is reported to be targeting a number of cell phone networks. LIME has advised its customers not to respond to any calls or messages originating from ‘+882’ numbers. Subscribers of other networks ought to follow suit.
