Scam stalking the unemployed online

Those presently looking for jobs online, there’s reason to be more vigilant. A spate of scams is going around specifically targeting them. In a previous post, I had written on how fraudsters were going through online job sites aiming to make victims there.
In a recent instance, fraudsters hired one such online job seeker in a bid to scam him. The incident happened in Athens County, GA last week. It is not known where exactly the fraudsters came across his profile, but they established contact with him through the internet.
The fraudsters told him they represented a company based in Indiana. The company President’s wife was planning to visit Athens. Would he care to take up the position of a driver and body guard for her, they asked.
When he showed interest, the fraudsters held forth a strange assignment. They sent across a check for $3400, an amount much more than the wages they had agreed upon. They asked him to cash the check to claim his fees and then wire across the balance to the President’s wife. She would require the money to purchase airline tickets for the trip, the fraudsters averred.
Their ploy failed, presumably because the man thought it wiser to check the matter with the police before trying to cash the check. The local police, in turn told him, his check was fake and that they had been receiving several complaints of late about similar scams. They also informed him he was lucky to get away unscathed.
