Hawaii National Bank hit with two Phishing scams, one disguised as a Survey

Customers of the Hawaii National Bank were targeted by two phishing scams last week. The scams were contrived to steal from customer accounts after obtaining their personal account information. The first attempt was disguised as a customer survey.
An email from the bank proclaimed the bank was holding a survey in order to know its customers better. In order to encourage customers to participate, the email claimed the bank was giving away $49.99 to those who took the survey. The amount would be directly credited to individual accounts immediately after they undertook the survey. To participate, customers were asked to answer five questions, some of them presumably about secret information of their accounts.
This email was followed by another one, apparently from the President and CEO of the bank. It informed account holders, the bank had installed new security measures for their accounts. This was avowedly done to ‘safeguard’ customers against the rising instances of phishing scams against them. In order to activate the new system, they are asked to click on a link and proceed to provide basic account information. As a scare, the mail warned them that failure to act would lead to suspension of their accounts.
Bank officials warned and reminded customers they would never ask for their account information in this manner. In case of any doubt, customers were advised to contact the bank personally or using official contact numbers.
