Email claiming you won a lawsuit, a Scam!

A new type of email scam was uncovered in St. Johnsville, NY, recently. Fraudsters are trying to con by approaching victims with claims that they won a prize lawsuit. The scam came to the surface when several residents approached local police to ascertain whether emails in their inboxes carrying this pitch were true.
The emails brought good tidings. In crisp language it informed recipients they had won a long class action lawsuit. As a result, they could now take home winnings amounting to thousands of dollars.
But before that, they are asked to pay a fee upfront. The money was stated to be for paying off some administrative fees or to cover taxes. The money, a few hundred dollars, would appear a trifling when compared to the thousands at hand.
Recipients were asked to mail the money to a post box address in Canada. An armored carrier from Brink’s would deliver their prize soon after, the email reassured.
Even with all its chutzpah, the scam found no takers in New York. Smelling a rat early on, residents approached local police for help.
The fraudsters on their part may not give up on the scam easily. Given their success rates, they might figure one in hundred would still fall for the scam, if not in New York, then maybe elsewhere.
