Scam couched in ‘Wal-Mart’ Email Survey

An email scam is attempting to pull off a con job using the name of supermarket chain, Wal-Mart. It is trying to do this by luring recipients with an offer to earn some easy money. The email invites recipients to participate in an online customer satisfaction survey presumably being conducted by the company.

Marked urgent, the email prods recipients to take a nine-question survey about their service experience with the company. Those who complete the survey are slated to get prize money ranging from $90 to $150, the mail promises. To take the survey, users are asked to click on a link inside the email.

The link is tainted. It would take clickers to a site that is designed to make visitors believe they are at the official site of WalMart.

The offer is exclusive, the email avers. Only a random few, selected by a computer, are to be presented with the offer.

After taking the survey, participants are asked to enter their credit card number and its PIN. This is required, the fraudsters explain so they can credit the prize money to the participants’ accounts.

However, the email overdoes the act when it tries to bully readers into taking the survey. It claims the recipient’s IP address is being noted for security purposes.

And those who think they can get away with feeding wrong information, beware; they would be ‘criminally pursued and indicted’, warn the fraudsters!
