Georgians warned against Email informing of Capital One Account hack

Residents of the US state of Georgia were warned by the Governor’s Office of Consumer Affairs against a phishing scam currently in circulation there. The scam is specifically targeted at customers of the Capital One Bank. Using a warped email, the scam warns recipients of a serious problem with their accounts.
To a casual glance, the email would look like an alert issued by the bank. Yet, the mail is a clever forgery. It informs recipients that security of their Capital One account has been breached. The mail was being sent presumably because the bank noticed several suspicious transactions in their accounts.
Account holders are urged to take immediate steps to protect their accounts. They are asked to click on a link proffered in the mail in order to view the unauthorized activity.
In true phishing style, the link takes customers to a phony website and asks them to give away confidential account information. Among other things, account holders are asked to key in their name, credit card number, address, social security number, and their date of birth.
Residents of the area may be indiscriminately served with the emails. Even those having no dealings with Capital One may find the scam mailed to their inboxes.
Account holders are advised to ignore the warnings inside the email. In case of any doubts, they are instructed to clarify the same by contacting the bank personally. Recipients of the mail may complain to Capital One at abuse@capitalone.com.
