Online Sellers in Carman get Fake Money Orders as payment

An internet scam was attempted on some residents of the township of Carman, Manitoba, CA recently. These locals had placed online ads offering goods for sale. The scam tried to con them by offering fake money orders as payment. Reports say this was not the first time this scam was trying its luck in the area.
The scam approached online sellers who had placed ads at a local website. Everything was done to have sellers believe they were taking part in a genuine transaction. After they struck a deal, the scam expressed its desire to make the payment in the form of a money order. The money order is promised to be sent by post.
Sellers waiting to hear from the fraudsters got a surprise as soon as they received the mail. The mail did fetch a money order all right. The money order, however, was made out for an amount far exceeding the money agreed upon as payment. A letter inside the mail quipped the thing to be a clerical mistake. It proffers sellers to cash the money order and avail of their payment.
Sellers are requested to wire the balance amount to an address in Europe. This is where the scam hoped victims would stumble. The money orders were fakes. Any money temporarily made available to those who cashed them was later recovered by the concerned bank as and when the fakes were revealed.
Local RCMP is presently advising online sellers in the area to tread with special caution. The fake money orders, they warned, were so good that they will pass-off as good at first instance.
Police encouraged residents to get in touch in case they came face-to-face with the scam.
