CRCable Internet subscribers of Campbell River, British Columbia (CA) are being targeted by a phishing scam presently. Online fraudsters are trying to fool them into giving away access codes to their CRCable email accounts. Users falling for the scam can land into a great deal of trouble.
Customers got an email that looked like it was sent by CRCable. It asked recipients to participate in a new security procedure of the company. The mail said they have to reply back with their email usernames and passwords. This was to authenticate they were the proper owners of the accounts.
Failure to participate will result in their accounts being permanently deactivated, the mail warned.
Revealing the scam, CRCable officials said the company would never ask their customers to do this. This was an attempt on the part of desperate fraudsters to get at the personal information of their subscribers by foraging through their compromised email accounts.
Users may get into bigger trouble, the company indicated. The fraudsters could take over their computers and clandestinely use it to further their scams. This would unwittingly make them party to the fraudsters’ immoral enterprise.
