IC3 2008 Internet Crime Report Reveals Increase in Cyber Crime

The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) released its annual report for 2008 revealing Figures on internet crime. If a brief review is considered ,overall IC3 Report highlighted increase in crime figures.

Infact complaints to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) jumped more than 33 percent in 2008 over 2007, with 275,284 complaint submissions.

The report from IC3, a combine effort between FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, which also also hinted the statistics that majority of the cases involved fraud in some way.Most of the fraud was sponsored through email ,telephones and internet instant messages.

Brief Analysis of the IC3 Statistics on Internet Crime for Year 2008


-As per report Most top seasoned crime were, Non-delivered merchandise/payment was the most
reported offense followed by auction fraud,and credit card/debit card fraud.

-Dollar loss of referred complaints was at an all time high in 2008, $264.59 million, exceeding last year’s record breaking dollar loss of $239.09 million.

-On average Seniors citizens were the worst targets of scammers ,Mostly the people between 50 to 59 and 60 and older reported losing money.

-Interestingly The total dollar loss from all referred cases of fraud in 2008 was $264.6 million which is very high as compared to 2007 .Check fraud was the first to earned the highest position in terms of scam , duping millions.
-Large number of scammers figured from United Kingdom, Nigeria, Canada, China, South Africa, Ghana, Spain, Italy and Romania.

-Most Used Scamming tactics sorted by fraudsters was sponsoring unsolicited e-mails claiming to be from the federalgovernment(FBI), OR IRS which is nothing but tactics to scare the people.
