Phoney Fraud Alert Scams-Telltale Signs and Preventive Steps.
Phoney fraud alerts or any such scams are nothing but phishing scams with a slight modification. A phone call or an e-mail from your bank or financial institution is the most common example. Scammers try to initiate a atmosphere of chaos by informing that your credit card of bank account has been involved in some sort of illegal activity or that your card details seem to have been stolen.
This is one of the oldest trick in coaxing you to divulge your financial or account details. Some scammers even go further by providing you with your credit card number and then asking you for the pin number. Such phoney fraud investigations are designed to lower your guard. Creating a chaos and then offering ‘help’ to fix the ‘problem’ is the modus operandi of such fraudsters.
Still there are some telltail signs which can help you to recognize such scams.
An email or phone call asking you to divulge your credit card number of bank details.
An email asking you to log on to a particular site in order to submit your details.
A caller claiming that some sort of fraudulent activity has taken place involving your bank account or credit card and then asking you to contact a fake fraud investigations body, rather than contacting your bank.
These signs should be enough for anyone to recognize that it is part of a phoney fraud alert scam.
Almost everyone of us can choose to stay safe from such phoney fraud alert scams by following the steps mentioned:
Keeping in mind never to give away credit card numbers or bank account details over the phone.
Do not open suspicious email.
Not visiting any of the sites which are hyper linked on such spam emails.
Never calling on phone numbers mentioned in any such spam emails.
Monitoring and subscribing to a credit report on a quarterly or yearly basis.
Reporting of such activities to the FTC or BBB.
