Jury Duty Telephone Fraud
The F.B.I has issued warnings to the public at large to beware of an ongoing scheme involving jury duty.
When a person is called upon to serve a jury duty it is not an optional preposition. Though is some exceptional cases the Federal Department may excuse that individual.
A person in full time employment, is entitled to full wages by his/her employer. Court where an individual is employed for jury duty is entitled to a fixed remuneration.
Jury Duty telephone fraudsters identifying themselves as U.S court officials have been telephonically contacting citizens and informing them that they have been selected for jury duty.
These fraudsters then ask the citizens to verify their personal details such as name, social security number, and even credit card numbers.
This information can then be used by the scammers for identity theft, health insurance theft, credit card theft etc. It is therefore advisable not to provide any sort of personal information over the phone irrespective of the organization or department which the the caller is trying to representing.
The US judicial system does not appoint jury duty members by contacting them over the phone and certainly does not ask for personal information.
If at all one has already been contacted by these jury duty telephone fraudsters, and unfortunately personal information is passed on, the best course of action would be to contact the credit card and financial institutions immediately.
One can also report of such jury duty telephone fraud by calling up the local FBI office (numbers are available on the first few pages of every telephone directory) or by logging on to www.fbi.gov
