Poetry Scam Alert-Fake Poetry Contests

Unlike majority of the scams about which most of us do possess some kind of knowledge, poetry scams are a relatively new concept and not many of us know what exactly a poetry scam is all about.
This is a scam intended not only for the poetry writers but, majority of people falling prey to such a scam are normal people who do not have any relation with poems or poetry whatsoever.
The luring factor behind poetry scams is the fame and fortune that it promises. Millions of dollars are lost every year to such fake poetry scams.
Normal individuals and aspiring poets constitute the major portion of masses who fall prey to this type of scam.
Advertisements in local magazines and newspapers are posted across the country. Sometimes even emails are received announcing such a poetry contest. These advertisements promise large financial rewards and publishing assurances . Contestants are required to drop in a poem in order to take part in the contest.
Now comes the ‘good’ news from the poetry scam department. One will be informed that their poetry has been selected for the semi-final round and that there are preparation already in place to publish your poem.
Any such news of a financial reward and recognition is bound to take most of us for a ride to fantasy land. The main meat of the whole fraud is revealed in the next line, wherein one is required to send in some amount of money in order to help in publishing your poem or just an administration fee.
The fantasy ride does not end here, senders are even told that they have been nominated for the ‘poet of the year’ award and in order for you to attend the award ceremony you are required to send in additional fee for the expenses.
This is basically how the poetry scam operates and thrives on a sentiments.

In order to safeguard oneself from such poetry scams the first and foremost criteria is to NOT give in to the fancy financial rewards or claims of publishing your poetry. Contributing to legitimate magazines and newspapers for the purpose of publishing your work is the best way to earn financial rewards as well as fame.
