Call 900 to get travel-scammed!!!

It has to be admitted that the amount of creativity that scammers are putting to use, if used in any other field would definitely yield amazing results. The latest scam off the blocks is the ‘call 900′ scam.
Consumers receive a postcard informing them that they have won a free trip and that they should call 900 immediately to claim the award. When a call is made to such a number, consumers are told that the free travel offered is in fact complimentary hotel lodging and to take advantage of the scheme they must purchase a round-trip plane ticket. In the end consumers find themselves wasting time and money on these costly 900 numbers.
It is therefore advisable that if any such travel operator refuses to give a hotel confirmation number or the name of the hotel, consumers should NOT believe in any claims made by any such travel agent. Consumers should also beware of direct advertising which promises exceptionally cheap packages. Once the traveler has paid the processing fee, the travel agent will come up with additional charges or in extreme cases even disappear.
Like most of the scams, travel scams are also growing. The fact that the economy is undergoing a recessionary phase, induces the travelers to believe in cheap packages and thereby becoming a target of such scams. The scope of such scams is greater than ever before due to the introduction of 900 numbers.
General public is therefore cautioned against such fake travel agents and travel packages. It is also advisable to do a bit or research before calling up such 900 numbers.
