Spam-Who’s to be blamed?
Spam, email spam or unsolicited advertising has been a nagging problem for quite some time now. Almost each and every email account is now bogged by one type of spam or another. The intensity of the problem can be determined from the fact that even free email account providers provide spam protection.
As with every situation, this spurt in spamming gave birth to a new industry-the spam protection software industry.
Anti-spam software was soon a hot-cake amongst internet users. It was realized at a later stage that a 100 percent relief from spam cannot be guaranteed by any anti-spam software. Yet another drawback came to light when users realized that even genuine email were being deleted accidentally.
Hence the relief in the form of anti-spam software was short lived. Though this software assisted in blocking spam, the main fault or root cause of the problem lie elsewhere. Internet users signing up for newsletters and in search for money making opportunities was in fact the first step in stirring up this ’spam-nest’.
Signing up for newsletters can be a safe option once we are able to read the fine lines. Most sites will give the assurance that your email will not be forwarded or provided to any other user, while this may be true in many cases, it might also be ‘just a statement’. Researching the site and ensuring that everything is in place is the best practice, if you do notice something which raises suspicion, leave the site.
Hence the best practice is to be alert about where and for what purpose we are providing our email address and to not give-in to temptations of money making sites. Getting rid of spam from our emails is not an overnight process, but we can slowly and steadily work towards cultivating better internet habits for a ’spam-free internet world’.
