Preventing Tax-Related Identity Theft
Tax season was considered to be a busy time for two major parties-the tax-payer and the tax collecting authorities. But not anymore, a third party is now even more busy than the earlier two and these are the scammers, hackers and identity thieves. No sooner the tax season approaches, scammers and fraudsters get busy weaving their tax scams and tax-related identity theft schemes.
Tax season is the prefect time for tax-related scams and other type of scams related to it. Scammers and identity thieves have invented newer ways to direct tax returns to their own personal sites or computers. Mentioned below is a list of tips that any and every tax payer should keep in mind whenever filing their tax returns:
1.Emails and telephone calls claiming to be from the IRS or any other financial authority should be outright regarded as a scam. The IRS or any other financial organization does not contact any individual via the internet or telephone.
2.Updating or installing the latest anti-virus software (bought from an authorized store) is the basic line of defense against any computer related spam.
3.Online filing of tax returns will always stand the risk of your data being stolen or not reaching its desired destination.
4.Hard copies having sensitive financial information should be disposed off effectively. Shredding all such documents is possibly the best way.
5.Before appointing a new accountant or firm to take care of your tax matters, confirm with the local authorities regarding their reputation and whether they are authorized with any state or federal agency.
6.If your computer develops a snag or stands irreparable, disposing it efficiently is of utmost importance.
